Environmental compliance is mostly about keeping track: which permissions you hold, when they expire, which conditions they carry and which returns are due. Businesses get into trouble less often through bad intent than through a missed renewal or a condition nobody read.
We help factories, hospitals, warehouses, builders and brands set up a compliance calendar, close gaps before an inspection and stay on top of the extended producer responsibility (EPR) rules that now cover plastic, e-waste, batteries, tyres and used oil.
Is this your situation?
- You are not sure which environmental permissions your unit needs
- Your consent or authorisation is about to expire
- You sell packaged goods, electronics or batteries and need EPR registration
- An inspection is expected or a buyer has asked for a compliance check
- You are expanding, adding a product line or changing fuel
- You want a single person to track all environmental deadlines
What compliance covers
Consents
Consent to establish before building and consent to operate before running.
Authorisations
Hazardous waste, biomedical waste and other waste rules.
EPR
Plastic, e-waste, battery, tyre and used oil obligations.
Returns and reports
Annual returns, environmental statements and EC compliance reports.
Groundwater and trees
NOCs for groundwater use and permissions for tree felling.
NCR rules
GRAP, CAQM directions and approved fuel rules in Delhi NCR.
Where businesses usually fall short
In our experience, the same gaps come up again and again: production higher than the consent allows; a new boiler or DG set added without amending the consent; hazardous waste sent to a vendor without valid authorisation; EPR targets not met because the recycler certificates were not checked; and annual returns filed late or not at all.
Each of these can lead to a notice or environmental compensation. Most can be fixed quickly if found before the board finds them.
How a legal compliance check works
We start with a list of every activity at the site and match it to the permissions it needs. Then we read the conditions in each consent and clearance and check whether they are being met, using records rather than assurances. The result is a short report: what is fine, what needs fixing, and how urgent each item is.
| Item | What we check | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Consent | Validity, capacity, products, fuel | Renewal or amendment |
| Waste authorisation | Validity, quantities, vendors | Renewal, vendor change, records |
| EPR | Registration, targets, certificates | Filing, purchase of certificates |
| Groundwater | NOC and meter readings | NOC application or renewal |
| Returns | Due dates and filings | Catch-up filing |

How we work
We are a litigation and advisory practice led by Advocate BK Singh, with offices in Dwarka (New Delhi) and Vaishali (Ghaziabad), working on environmental matters across India.
- Deadline first: we tell you the time limit before anything else.
- Regulator and tribunal: we handle the board stage and the NGT, so nothing is lost between them.
- Plain advice: what we think will happen, including when a case is not worth filing.
- Written fee terms: agreed stage by stage, never linked to the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every factory need consent?
Most do. White category industries are generally exempt from consent but may need to inform the board. Check the category list for your state.
How often must consent be renewed?
It depends on the state and the category. Red category consents are usually shorter than green ones. Renew before expiry to avoid running without consent.
What is EPR?
Extended producer responsibility makes producers, importers and brand owners responsible for collecting and recycling their products or packaging, with annual targets tracked on CPCB portals.
Do hospitals have separate rules?
Yes. Biomedical waste is governed by the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016, which need an authorisation and specific handling and records.
Can you act as our ongoing compliance counsel?
Yes. Many clients use us on a retainer to track deadlines and handle notices as they come.
Is an audit the same as a statutory environmental audit?
No. Our check is a legal review. Some laws and orders require technical audits by accredited agencies, which we can coordinate.
Want your compliance checked?
Send us your consents and authorisations. We will tell you what needs attention first.
This page gives general information about environmental law as it stood when it was last reviewed. It is not legal advice on your case and does not promise any result. Laws, rules and time limits change, so check the current position for your matter before acting.
