Some environmental matters do not fit neatly into one category. A stone crusher may involve mining, air pollution and siting rules all at once. A coastal resort may need CRZ clearance, consent and wildlife approval. These are the cases where specialised experience matters most.

We handle the more technical corners of environmental law, for businesses operating in these sectors and for people affected by them.

Check first

Is this your situation?

  • You run or plan a mine, quarry, stone crusher or brick kiln
  • Your project is near the coast and may fall in a CRZ
  • There has been a fire, gas leak or spill at an industrial site
  • A unit near you is causing strong odour or dust
  • Your business has received sector-specific directions, such as fuel or technology rules
  • You face an issue involving rivers, floodplains or sand mining
Key points

Specialised areas

Mining and quarrying

EC, consent, mining plans and closure obligations.

Coastal zones

CRZ classification and approvals.

Kilns and crushers

Siting rules, technology requirements and consent.

Industrial accidents

Response, liability and compensation after an incident.

Odour and nuisance

Complaints and enforcement where standards are not clear-cut.

Rivers

Pollution, floodplains and court-monitored clean-up.

Mining

Mining, quarrying and sand

Most mining needs environmental clearance under the EIA Notification, 2006, as well as consent and mining approvals under the mining laws. Minor mineral mining, including sand, is governed by state rules, with central guidelines on sustainable sand mining and enforcement. Disputes often involve mining beyond the lease, mining in riverbeds without approval, and damage to roads, wells and farms nearby.

Coastal areas

Coastal Regulation Zones

The CRZ Notification, 2019 classifies coastal areas into zones and decides what can be built in each. Approvals come from the coastal zone management authority of the state and, for some projects, the environment ministry. Construction without CRZ approval has led to demolition orders, so checking the classification of the site is essential.

Accidents

After an industrial accident

The first days after an accident matter. The unit must inform the authorities, contain the damage and cooperate with inquiries. Affected people may claim immediate relief under the Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991 and compensation before the NGT, where liability can apply even without proof of negligence.

  • Deadline first: we tell you the time limit before anything else.
  • Regulator and tribunal: we handle the board stage and the NGT, so nothing is lost between them.
  • Plain advice: what we think will happen, including when a case is not worth filing.
  • Written fee terms: agreed stage by stage, never linked to the outcome.
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a small quarry need environmental clearance?

Most mining, including minor minerals, needs EC under the EIA Notification, though the authority and process depend on the area. Check the current rules for your state.

Can I build a house in a CRZ area?

Depending on the zone, some local construction may be allowed with approval. Check the CRZ classification first.

Are brick kilns allowed near villages?

They are subject to siting rules and emission standards, which vary by state. Many have had to change technology under recent rules.

What should a unit do right after an accident?

Inform the authorities, contain the damage, preserve records and take legal advice before giving detailed statements.

Is odour a pollution issue?

Yes. Strong odour often signals a breach of consent conditions or waste rules, and can be raised with the board.

Can the NGT order clean-up of a river?

Yes. The NGT has monitored the clean-up of many polluted river stretches and imposed compensation on defaulting bodies.
